Just a little while later - March 2010

Hi All,

Wanted to log in and get an update posted on the CUSH 61 page.

Still living in Daytona Beach Florida - since 1986 - and enjoying the sunshine and warm weather most of the time.  Coldest winter since 1955 for us but still a good place to live for the money.

Major news is my retirement back in November 2009.  After spending over 39 years in the Sports Administration field I hung it up. (12 years with S.D. Chargers, 4 years with Quantel Computers and 23 years at the Daytona International Speedway.)  It has taken almost a year to get adjusted to not “having to go to work”.  Do still work for the Speedway during their major races which is a good way to stay connected.

Have played less golf than when I worked but that is OK since my game sucks and suspect it will always suck.  Still fun to get out with some of the guys and hit that little white ball.

Did get involved last year with volleyball officiating.  Started with USAV club matches and moved into high school matches this past fall.  Enjoy the activity and contact with younger players.  The sport was good to me and I wanted to give back in  some way.  Will continue to work high school events this fall.

Have gotten to travel a bit more these days.  Made 3 trip to San Diego area last year to spend time with my son and his family and my first grand child.  Being a Grand Dad is all they said it would be and more.

Hope this note finds all of happy and well.

Cheers

Gary

Sept. 2001

I'm sorry that I can't make it to the Function at the Junction in Oct. but I'll take time, on that evening, to have a cold one in honor of the occasion and in the memory of one of my best friends ever, Bob DeVore.

The journey over the past 40 years has been a fast one filled with more good times than bad, more ups than downs and many blessings.

As Bob DeVore and I headed west on Hwy 80 to San Diego State in Sept. of 1961 we both knew that our view of the "Valley" would not be the same from that time on.

My time at SDSC helped me grow as a person, build self-confidence and establish some lifetime friendships. The educational, social and athletic opportunities provided me with a good foundation to move into the real world.

After graduation and being commissioned as an office in the Air Force I was assigned to Grand Forks ND as part of an ICBM squadron.  As a boy from The Valley I had some adjusting to do when the -60 degree winters hit. During my four years in "The Forks" I did manage to learn how to ice skate (in a rink we made in our back yard), snow ski and shovel snow (from Nov. to April). One of the most interesting points of my tour of duty was being selected as part of a test launch crew to fire one of our ICBM's from Vandenburg AFB. Turning the key to launch that puppy was kind of cool and something only about 10 crews a year got to do.  Again the Air Force offered me the opportunity to make some life long friends and see a part of the US I never would of on my own, trust me.

In 1970 I got out of the AF and spent a month skiing in Colorado, went on to San Francisco to live with my future wife and play rugby for the SF Rugby Club then took a 2 month back packing trip around Europe before settling in at Long Beach State and starting work on my MBA. (Also got married to my college sweetheart and worked for the SD Chargers at their summer camp prior to school starting.)  Life was good as my wife was a TWA flight attendant at the time and we were able to take many trips across the US and around the world.

Got my MBA and took a job with the Chargers in 1973. Worked for the team for the next 13 years doing about everything except play. (College scouting, pro-player personnel, business operations, promotions/public relations, travel coordinator, summer training camp director and ticket operations.) The opportunity to be associated with some of the best pro coaches and future Hall of Fame players was something I will always cherish.  We got close to the Super Bowl twice with "Air Coryell" but fell one game short both times. It was a job but a fun one.

During this time I divorced and lived the single life for 3 years. In 1978 got married again and this time I got a package deal with a son, Jason 7 and daughter 4 at the time, along with a wife Michele.

In 1982 I took a job with a software company who at that time was the leader in sports administration software in the US and moved to Clearwater Florida.   This job offered me the opportunity to work with some of the big names in the sports world. The Dallas Cowboys, Raiders, Rams, Oilers, Dolphins, 49ers, LA Express, Lakers, Penn State, Washington State, LSU, Toronto Blue Jays to name a few.  I ended up as the General Manager for the company but when they elected to move the office back to the San Francisco area I started looking for a job in Florida.

As luck would have it, in 1986, I was offered a position with the Daytona International Speedway to direct the installation of their first in-house computer ticketing system (the first one in any motor sports facility in the world). We moved to Daytona Beach that summer and Daytona has been home ever since.  The Speedway was in the process of making major changes and planning for the growth they saw coming in the sport of auto racing.  The opportunity to be a part of the explosion of NASCAR from a regional sport to one of the big 5 sports in the US was a real blessing.  My role within the corporation has allowed me to use my experience and education to develop and implement many new operational and management procedures now used at the 13 major speedways we own and operate across the US.

During this time my son graduated from Penn State and moved back to San Diego and my daughter graduated from Appalachian State University and now teaches in Charlotte North Carolina. As with all parents I am extremely proud of the young adults my children have become.  This past year I concluded a second divorce and with the help of Family, Friends and my Faith I have moved on to the next phase of my life with a clear mind and a kind heart.  Try to live a healthy life style and workout 3 times a week. Plan to take up the game of golf in the next six months.  Travel is still a passion with me and through work and pleasure I've visited 49 states, Australia, Japan, Israel, Greece, most of Canada, Ireland, England and most of Europe but still a lot more places to visit (just need a traveling partner).

Who knows what the next 20 years will bring but I do know that in the past 40 I've been proud to call myself a "Valley Rat" and will always be one.  Again I'm sorry for not making the Function at the Junction but I'll be there in sprit.

PS- also attached two recent photos one by my company car and one holding up a palm tree outside my office.  Yes the hat is a fashion statement but it also keep the question alive as to how much hair do I still have?

God Bless.
